Not going to lie. This was not one of our better recipes. It was way too sweet and the kids wouldn’t touch it with the exception of a tiny dab on their fingers. It could have been good with way less sugar and no vanilla, but the figs came right off our fig tree and recipe we used clearly didn’t start with super ripe figs. In this recipe I left out the vanilla and cut the sugar down (the video has the original amount of both). I think it could be really good and a different alternative to normal strawberry or raspberry jam. It could also be a good way to introduce kids to this unique fruit, but again, make sure it’s not sooooooo sweet.
What is Fig Jam?
Fig Jam is a spread made from figs, a special kind of fruit that grows on fig trees. Add sugar, water and a little lemon juice to the recipe and cook down to turn into sweet and fruity paste
Ingredients for Fig Jam:
- Figs: A sweet and juicy fruits that come in all sorts of colors, like purple, green, and brown.
- Sugar: To make the figs even sweeter (in our case, a little too sweet). Sugar helps bring out the natural sweetness of the figs and gives the jam that sticky texture.
- Lemon Juice: A little splash of lemon juice adds a touch of zing to the jam.
- Water: We need a bit of water to help cook everything down into a spreadable jam.
Why We Like Fig Jam:
- Sweet and Fruity: It’s a naturally sweet fruit with a unique flavor and goes great with all kinds of cheeses and nuts.
- Versatile: Fig jam is super versatile. You can spread it on toast for a breakfast, put it on a peanut butter sandwich for lunch, or even use it as a topping for cheese on crackers for a snack.
- Healthy: Figs are packed with vitamins and fiber, which are good for your body. So when you eat fig jam, you’re not only enjoying something tasty, but you’re also giving your body some nutrients it needs.
Here is what you need:
2 cups figs
1 cup sugar
¼ cup lemon
½ cup water
Let’s do this:
- Prepare the Figs: Wash the figs thoroughly and remove the stems.
- Combine Ingredients: In a large saucepan, mix together the washed figs, sugar, lemon juice, and water. Give it a gentle stir to make sure everything is nicely combined.
- Cooking Time: Place the saucepan on the stove over medium heat. Let the mixture come to a gentle boil, stirring occasionally. Once it starts boiling, reduce the heat to low and let it simmer.
- Simmer Away: Allow the fig mixture to simmer for about 45 minutes or until it thickens up. Make sure to stir every now and then to prevent it from sticking to the bottom of the pan.
- Test for Doneness: To check if your fig jam is ready, put a small spoonful on a plate and let it cool for a minute. If it thickens up nicely, it’s good to go. If not, let it simmer a bit longer.
- Cool and Store: Once your fig jam is ready, remove it from the heat and let it cool down. Then, with the help of your grown-up, carefully pour it into a clean jar or container. Make sure the jar is tightly sealed.
- Enjoy!: Your homemade fig jam is now ready to spread on toast, use in sandwiches, or enjoy with crackers and cheese.
